Not just quilts... from Art In Search

I love to make quilts, sew quilts, cut quilts, dream quilts. However, I spend time and energy watercolor painting. It is a different thinking kind of art than quilting. You may have an idea, and sketches, but you don't know how it will go or where it go. All kinds of surprises and accidents of timing. I don't show my work, but just keep painting. I decided this year, I will put more paintings on this blog because the thought of making a second blog gives me the heebie jeebies. I paint because of color, value and texture ...

Icy February from Pinkadot Quilts

First of all I am sorry for the bad pictures, we are in the midst of rain turning to ice later today.
This was a quilt that did not start out as a Valentine quilt but turned into one!

I was thinking more "Home is where the heart is" But I think the pink made it more Valentineish. Is that even a word?

Picking out just the perfect fabric is a labor of love. Checks are always a "yes" in my book.

The hearts were simple to make, I am sure you can figure them out just by looking at ...

All the 2021 Finish-It-Up Details and Looking Ahead At What's Next from Quilty Folk

It was a strange, bewildering year. A lot of us yo-yoed between depression and keeping our head down, just trying to get through. Why even bother with anger when the energy could be much better spent stitching our way to some sort of tranquility? Once again, I have been ever so grateful for this colorful, fascinating, soul-soothing hobby of mine. Though I often felt like the days were aimlessly drifting by, the 2021 finished quilts tell the real story. These hands of mine were busy, busy, busy....

I've been feeling a wee bit guilty about one particular quilt that ...

Odds and Ends from Quilty Folk

I'm slowly getting a little bit of quilting done on Bullseye Medallion. I say 'slowly', because it seems like I've been skipping every other night lately. Oh well. At least there's something happening with it even if it doesn't look like much!

Hand quilting Bullseye Medallion
It's a long story, but the short version is that I got totally distracted by a squirrel last week. It started out with a mad dash through the orphaned/abandoned blocks totes and ended up being eleven doll quilts.

Little doll quilts
These simple little orphan quilts were gifted ...

Design Wall Monday - November 1, 2021 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

Good Morning Quilters! This past week I decided to work on something small and simple, and an Instagram friend, Taryn Faulkner, had pictures up of a #Halloweekendsewalong. Her name on Instagram is Reproquiltlover and she inspires me because she loves to make copies of vintage quilts, just as I do.  Anyway, she made a cheddar and white pinwheel doll quilt that made me want to make one too.  I

Design Wall Monday - July 26, 2021 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

Well, another Monday is here……and I played all week.  Had a great family party yesterday and loved seeing some of our Hansen relatives again.  Between party prep, overnight company, and actual party, I did very little quilting.  I did finish this doll quilt top:It’s a doll quilt I’ve been working on along with the larger one I just finished.  The 11 inch square little Apple Core quilt is all red

Design Wall Monday - May 17, 2021 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

Good Morning Quilters! The little doll quilt I started last week is now finished.  It measures 12 x 13.5 inches.  As I said last week, it is a copy of one of the doll quilts in the Mary Ghormley Collection which is at the International Quilt Museum in Lincoln, Nebraska.  The original doll quilt is 17.25 x 19.5 inches.I made the little triangle corners on the back for ease in hanging it up, should

Birthday Celebrations, Part 2 from Needle and Foot

Hello all! We are back home in California after a couple of long driving days. Much as I love visiting the kids, the drive is long. It will be nice when we get our vaccines and can feel safer about flying. Soon, I hope. I have seen lots of posts on Instagram about many of you receiving the vaccine. California hasn’t gotten to me quite yet. Waiting and checking and waiting some more!

Let’s talk about A’s first birthday. It was really fun and I greatly enjoyed being there for it. Of course she didn’t have ...

Two Tiny Finishes from Wedding Dress Blue

These two tiny quilts were stitched in the final days of 2020.

What a nice way to end the year.

This one was out of the cutest orphan blocks I have ever seen.

This one is a top I started years ago from a quiltalong at Temecula Quilt Company. They always have cute (little) ideas available.

Glad to have them finished!

Small but satisfying from The Academic Quilter

Hi everyone, and happy weekend! It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas around here, except for the fact that today it was 55 degrees outside. I feel like I could make do without snow, though, as long as there are plenty of Christmas cookies, and maybe a small bit of mulled wine. Our tree is up and decorated and there are even a couple of presents. Wait, how did those get there? And are they for me?

Back in the sewing room, which is decorated with various fabric scraps and snippets in festive piles on the floor, the ...

Design Wall Monday - October 26, 2020 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

True to my name, Small Quilts and Doll Quilts happened this week.  (1). I was putting some scraps away, and found some broken dishes blocks that were lost a while ago.   When I was making the broken dishes king sized quilt (this one) I lost some blocks, and had to make more.  Now that quilt is completed and I found the lost parts.  I decided to make a doll quilt with the blocks, and used all

Desgn Wall Monday - September 21, 2020 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

Good Morning Quilters!  Quilting activity:  I am working on a doll quilt that I am trying to put names in the center of signature blocks.  It is not going well so far.  I am experimenting with waste cloth cross stitch, desolvable cross stitch foundation, and just regular embroidery of a name.  I am debating tearing out what I’ve done so far and starting over.  The usual disappointment when

Starry Hearts FREE Doll Quilt Instructions from Collector with a Needle

My Valentines gift to you - Starry Hearts Doll Quilt instructions with a template for a seven pointed star

Have you ever made a seven pointed star?
It was a first for me - I enjoyed it and I think you might too.

The original vintage quilt was found at a local antiques shop.  Too sweet to pass up and not share with you.

The little bear has lost all most all of his mohair...and ears!
Shoe button eyes are a little loose.
She has lace trimmed sleeves and a plaid scarf - it is cold here.

The dolly is a printed ...

weekend goings . . . from Count it *all* JOY!

Todd and I got on the road yesterday afternoon and headed to Tuscaloosa for a missions conference.  We stayed overnight at the Bama B&B!

It's a really pretty place and I'll share more about that later.

I finished up granddaughter Olivia's patchwork doll quilt . . .
Just a simple finish.  It's sweet! I'll get this out in the mail to her on Monday.

I also finished block 20 of my Grandmother's Choice BOM.
I had trouble with the points on this one.  I may (*may*) go back and fiddle with it. I also may not ...

Design Wall Monday - January 20, 2020 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

The decision has been made on my January UFO.  Thanks for your input.  I am in the process of making small half-square triangles to ring the outside of the cheddar baskets quilt. Here is a picture of the progress on the hsts: The six quilts that are going into the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show in February are now ready to be sent to Virginia. This week I finished the hanging sleeves and labels

Design Wall Monday - January 6, 2020 from Small Quilts and Doll Quilts

I am trying to stay "whelmed" in 2020......not underwhelmed.......not overwhelmed........just in the middle....whelmed.  I think of it as being happy with the progress I am making.  To be encouraged by the work finished each month in 2020. I have now documented all of my UFOs per my last post of 2019.  My plan is to finish one each month.  The UFO for January is a quilt that needs the outer

Wrapping Up 2019 So We Can All Move On from Quilty Folk

I always think this end of the year retrospective should be a quick post, but somehow
it never quite works out quite that way. Oh well. Time for a glimpse of whatever finishes
managed to come to fruition during the past year! It always surprises me how it stacks
up. Never quite what I imagined somehow!
2019 Finishes (1)
It's been a surprisingly productive year. So many times it felt like I was just sort of spinning my wheels, or at times, chasing after ever single squirrel that popped around the corner. Some of the oldest quilt tops did ...

Finishing Up the Last Minute Christmas Makes Was Great Fun from Quilty Folk

Well, here it is! Playing with Scale #2 is a true blue finish. It's been hanging around for awhile, just waiting on the binding stitches. While hand quilting this one, I decided to gift it to our oldest granddaughter. This seems to have a happy, youthful vibe plus it will match with the decor in her bedroom. Not that it matters to me, but it will probably make her mama happy!

Playing With Scale #2 is finished!
It's large enough that she should be able to use it for years and years too. Personally I have a fondness ...

Dressing a Canopy Doll Bed from Collector with a Needle

I love canopy beds.

I have one in the guest room with a hand tied canopy.
Guests love it too.

I have a few canopy doll beds that need bedding so when I found this one - I almost didn't get it.

How many more projects do I need to add to the list?
I justified it because I thought I had a few doll quilts at home that could be used to dress it out.

I got it and I'm glad I did.

It did not look like this when I got it.
